How do I know what my landlord can and can’t do?
As a renter you have rights. It’s important to know your rights and know who to contact if you have a problem with your landlord. 

The Fair Housing Act says you must be offered housing fairly and without discrimination regardless of the following, which are known as protected classes:

• race
• color
• country where you were born
• religion
• sex
• familial status
• disability

Also, depending on where you live, there may be local ordinances that prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation, and in some cases gender identity. Learn more about national housing protection laws.
